Ricoh Aficio GX3000 - Review

Monday, August 13th, 2007

Early this month, Ricoh launched a colour printer which it claims to give clear waterproof and sunlight resistant prints with an amazing gamut of colours.

Our representative attended the launching held at the new G Hotel at Penang.

Instead of using the regular ink, the GX3000 uses a gel-based technology which dries quickly and is water-resistent.  Claimed to be able to print at resolutions of up to 3600 X 1200 dpi, there is an LCD screen at the front which provides information on the printing job.  The gel cartridges are located at the front of the printer and is easy to replace.  Setting up the Ricoh GX3000 is relatively quick and easy via USB port.

With all the excitement of the launch, the Ricoh GX3000 isn’t a speedy machine as it takes more than 40 seconds to warm up and for the first printout.

With all the excitement of the launch, we find that the printouts are not as sharp as should be.  Priced at RM888-00, it’s definitely an expensive alternative to a regular inkjet printer and a far-cry from HP OfficeJet 5610.

    Dot-Matrix Printer

    Saturday, August 4th, 2007

When it comes to dot-matrix printer, the market is still dominated by Panasonic with  it’s Model KX-P 1121 which caters to A4 printing, and KX-P 3626 for A3 printing.

The demand for dot-matrix printers has remained steady in the face of growing popularity for laser toner printers.

The pros of a dot-matrix printer would be that it costs less to operate.  An original ribbon for KX-P 1121 is about RM20-00 and the ribbon goes round the coil repeatedly, until the carbon diminishes.  Another advantage would be that you can do carbonise printing which is especially true for billing purposes when more than one copy is needed.

People who choose a dot-matrix printer cannot, however, demand for quality printing.
